Articles: Mormons and Others Heed Warnings to Store Food for Emergencies and Disasters

Mormons recently received a renewed warning to store food for emergencies and disasters, but they are not the only ones involved in food storage. A company that provides food storage help reports that people from all faiths and parts of the world are learning to store food.

Salt Lake City, Utah -- Mormons, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, have been taught since the time of Brigham Young that they should have a year’s supply of food storage in their homes for possible emergencies, financial hard times, and disasters.

But it is not just the Mormons who think food storage is a good idea. People of all faiths, and from all parts of the world are actively seeking help with their food storage, according to Jeff Augason of Blue Chip Group, Inc.

Augason’s company has been helping people with bulk foods for storage for more than 30 years. The company provides all types of inexpensive bulk storage foods, with packaging and containers to protect it so it will be ready when needed. The company offers a web site filled with information and help on food storage ideas at http://www.FoodStorageIdeas.com.

At the recent Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, members of the church were reminded once again about the need for food storage, and were told it is needed now more than ever.

Bishop Keith B. McMullin spoke at the conference and issued a renewed warning to “lay up in store” and advised church members to “store sufficient so that you and your family can weather the vicissitudes of life.”

In his presentation, which was broadcast live to all church buildings throughout the world, McMullin asked leaders of local congregations to distribute a copy of the brochure “All is Safely Gathered In,” which is also available to the public at the LDS Church website http://www.LDS.org

Past disasters have illustrated the need to have plenty of supplies stored at home. It may be days before evacuations take place or help can arrive, and if large numbers of people are evacuated there might not be enough food at the shelters. The solution is for people to be self-sufficient, according to Augason.

“Food storage is easy when you understand that you do not need to go out and buy an entire year’s supply all at once,” said Augason. “Just buy a little extra each week and start putting the extra into your storage. It doesn’t take long before a little extra each week starts to add up.”

Augason also says the way to save money on food is to buy in bulk.

“Food is less expensive when purchased in larger quantities. We teach people to buy the foods they need and use on a regular basis, but they should buy in larger quantities to save money. Eventually by using this method of shopping, they can build up a good supply of food that they can rely on if disaster strikes,” said Augason.
